My experience submitting a scientific abstract

Why did you choose the CIRSE Annual Congress to submit your scientific abstract?

The CIRSE Annual Congress presented a wonderful opportunity to learn from an international author group. As a trainee in the US, I wanted to expand my network and be exposed to innovations across the world. CIRSE 2023 was a perfect blend of learning about the recent advancements in IR while also enjoying the local culture.

Tell us a little bit about the research you submitted!

We presented an angiographic classification system for haemorrhoid artery embolization (HAE).

HAE is an increasingly popular procedure with a definite need in patients with otherwise limited options. The HAE anatomy can be challenging, and we presented a more novel classification system centred around the middle genicular artery.

Are there any special considerations to take into account when submitting a scientific abstract?

I would keep things concise and simple. I think it’s easy to be wordy and get lost in the message. I think focused abstracts have the best shot at being selected.

Do you have any tips for physicians submitting an abstract for the first time?

I think the best resources are prior abstracts. They provide a good outline to follow. Don’t be afraid of rejection – if anything, you can learn from it and get better next time!

Will you submit another abstract for CIRSE 2024?

Of course, I am excited to attend CIRSE 2024 and see the latest updates in IR. It was a fun atmosphere in 2023 and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2024. See you in Lisbon!

Why did you choose the CIRSE Annual Congress to submit your scientific abstract?

I chose to submit for CIRSE 2023, as I had attended the CIRSE Annual Congress virtually in the past and found the collective projects and presentations inspirational and informative. I knew presenting my research at CIRSE would allow me to receive world class opinions about my project and how to direct my future research.

Tell us a little bit about the research you submitted!

My project was a retrospective analysis that studied how different particle embolic sizes affect lower urinary tract outcomes (LUTS) following PAE and if complication rates varied with particle size.

This abstract idea came to me while attending a meeting during a panel discussion amongst experts in PAE.

Are there any special considerations to take into account when submitting a scientific abstract?

Ask interesting questions. Once you have a question that you and others will want to know, the work becomes fun. Also realize that people don’t always get abstracts accepted and that’s okay.

Do you have any tips for physicians submitting an abstract for the first time?

The most important thing is to find a good mentor. Their experience will aid in your abstract submission being meaningful to the IR community and well received. Make sure to be aware of the submission guidelines, as your abstract will need to be concise to effectively convey your findings.

Will you submit another abstract for CIRSE 2024?

Definitely! I learned an incredible amount by attending CIRSE. Getting different perspectives on topics within IR only enhances your ability in delivering world class care to your patients.
